I have been quietly obsessed with disco for over a year now. Not the soundtrack from Saturday Night Fever kind of disco (although that’s great and certainly has it’s place). No, I’m talking about the white label hidden in the crate gems. Plus some off-label stuff from artists you recognize. Some old music, some new tracks, some recently reworked treasures. My goal here is to keep the bass pumping. You have to move. You can’t resist it.

I walked out of work today at 5pm and it was beautiful outside. The sun was shining. The temperature was perfect. It just felt so good. Then I came home and listened to this song:

I’m headed to Ibiza soon. Maine first, then Ibiza. I call it my rhyming vacation: “I’m going to Maine…then I’m going to Spain.”

I am obsessed. Obsessed with modern disco, that is. I just can’t seem to get enough these days. I like the new stuff that’s being written, and I like the old stuff that’s being remixed with modern disco flair. Check out folks like Late Nite Tuff Guy and Psychemagik for a taste of what I’m talking about. And of course my good friend Shorty. Love it.

A few weeks ago I flew up to Toronto to catch a Deadmau5 set for a Canadian music channel called Much. The beauty was it was going to be in an 800-person room, and he was bringing the full mask, cube, and light show. Sounds fun, right?

I’ve been trying to make it to a Deadmau5 show for years now. I’ve actually bought tickets twice before and not been able to make it either time. So this was my third attempt. What could possibly go wrong?

As it turned out, he had been doing gigs in England and was trying to fly out of Heathrow when they closed the airport for snow. And kept it closed. And kept it closed some more. So he didn’t make it to Toronto in time for the show. So much for three being a charm.

On the plus side, he is doing the show tonight and Much is streaming it live at 10pm ET here.

New Years Eve 2010

So I learned two things last night. The first is that coat check for 1000 people is a logistical challenge. Especially when things go wrong. Thank you to everyone who helped make a bad situation better. Second, I had the honor of DJing for 1000 people. It was amazing, and so much fun to see everyone rocking out and having a good time.

A special shout out to DJ Matty Matt. You brought the thunder last night. Plus I’ve been listening to the Dimitri From Paris mix you recommended as I’m making my french toast and chilling out this morning:

I was out with some friends the other night and I heard what sounded like the bass line to Billie Jean. The words sounded vaguely like Smuggler’s Blues, but not really. Whatever it was, I knew I liked it.

So what’s a DJ to do? Pull out my phone and tag it with Shazam, of course.

The answer: ”Bright Lights Bigger City” off of Cee Lo Green’s new album. I’m sure you’ve heard this song off the same album. So I headed over to Amazon and it turns out they’re offering the entire album for $5 through the end of December. If these two tracks are any indication, we’re going to enjoy the rest.

I’ll be busting “Bright Lights Bigger City” out at my next gig — which, by the way, is New Years Eve.

I am lucky. I have two DJ gigs this weekend. That means you are lucky too, since you’ll have two chances to catch my set.

Here’s something to listen to while I give you the deets:

Gig #1: Saturday 11/13 at the Crooked Knife

232 West 14th Street btw. 7th & 8th Aves | 10:30p – whenever

I’m new to this spot. I’ll be spinning a mix of pretty much everything. There will be dancing (by you, not me). I think it’s free.

Funny story about this one. On Halloween I crashed the VIP area at the Frying Pan using someone else’s name. I didn’t really know him, got his name wrong, and almost didn’t make it past the bouncer. I did, however, prevail. Fast forward four days and I’m sitting across a dinner table from the same guy. We strike up a conversation. I tell him the story. It turns out we’re both DJs. I end up with a gig at the Crooked Knife.

Gig #2: Sunday 11/14 at Slate

54 West 21st Street btw. 5th and 6th Aves | 6:00p – 9:00p

This is a charity event for The Special Needs Performing Arts Alliance. Advance tickets are available here for $35 (or $50 at the door). My guess is that there won’t be quite as much dancing at this one. There will however be a White Elephant Sale, Key Note Speakers, & Live Musical Performance by Reina. Sherri Shepherd will be attending and speaking and Brielle Calafiore of Jerseylicious will be hosting our Auction! Open Bar will be from 6:00pm -7:00pm then a cash bar will replace from 7:00pm -9:00pm. Hors D’oeurvres will be served through out. The music will be great and you’ll be contributing to a great cause.

It’s that time of year again, when we salivate over a new version of The List every day. Don’t know what I’m talking about?

Winter Music Conference (WMC): the annual pilgrimage to Miami to hear every DJ in the world spin. It’s like a little slice of Ibiza right here in the United States.

(that’s Cafe Del Mar in Ibiza, for those of you–including me–who have never been)

I love The List! I’ve been to WMC three times and it’s always amazing (in fact, I met my favorite girl in the entire world there). One of my favorite things is casually stopping by to catch an hour or two of a famous DJ’s set…and then moving on to the next famous DJ. And on. And on. And on.
