A few weeks ago I flew up to Toronto to catch a Deadmau5 set for a Canadian music channel called Much. The beauty was it was going to be in an 800-person room, and he was bringing the full mask, cube, and light show. Sounds fun, right?

I’ve been trying to make it to a Deadmau5 show for years now. I’ve actually bought tickets twice before and not been able to make it either time. So this was my third attempt. What could possibly go wrong?

As it turned out, he had been doing gigs in England and was trying to fly out of Heathrow when they closed the airport for snow. And kept it closed. And kept it closed some more. So he didn’t make it to Toronto in time for the show. So much for three being a charm.

On the plus side, he is doing the show tonight and Much is streaming it live at 10pm ET here.

I was out with some friends the other night and I heard what sounded like the bass line to Billie Jean. The words sounded vaguely like Smuggler’s Blues, but not really. Whatever it was, I knew I liked it.

So what’s a DJ to do? Pull out my phone and tag it with Shazam, of course.

The answer: ”Bright Lights Bigger City” off of Cee Lo Green’s new album. I’m sure you’ve heard this song off the same album. So I headed over to Amazon and it turns out they’re offering the entire album for $5 through the end of December. If these two tracks are any indication, we’re going to enjoy the rest.

I’ll be busting “Bright Lights Bigger City” out at my next gig — which, by the way, is New Years Eve.

It’s been a very long time. Pretty much everything in my life has changed. And now it’s time to start blogging again.

It’s that time of year again, when we salivate over a new version of The List every day. Don’t know what I’m talking about?

Winter Music Conference (WMC): the annual pilgrimage to Miami to hear every DJ in the world spin. It’s like a little slice of Ibiza right here in the United States.

(that’s Cafe Del Mar in Ibiza, for those of you–including me–who have never been)

I love The List! I’ve been to WMC three times and it’s always amazing (in fact, I met my favorite girl in the entire world there). One of my favorite things is casually stopping by to catch an hour or two of a famous DJ’s set…and then moving on to the next famous DJ. And on. And on. And on.

So, in honor of WMC next month, here’s a taste of what you’ll hear.

Jared (here and here) is headed to Chicago this weekend to catch a 7-hour set by Blake Jarrell. I was checking out Blake’s site and ended up listening to the recording of the last 7-hour set he did last July. It’s in three parts and you can find it here:

I like it, although I find that he bounces back and forth between thumping tunes and more lush, cinematic soundscapes. He doesn’t really sit on a groove.

He does seem to have a great time, though. Check him out on New Years Eve here. He was in Dubai opening up for Armin Van Buuren. Nice gig!

I was hanging out with Sean and Natalia the other night and they turned me on to Bomba Stereo (or Bomba Estéreo for those of you who speak Spanish). They’re Colombian and their song “Fuego” is a hit in Cartagena (and it’s also a McDonald’s commercial — who knew). You can check it out from last summer’s concert in Central Park here.

I’ve been listening to the rest of their “Blow Up” album and it’s solid. Some dancey tunes like “Fuego” but also a few more cerebral (or maybe I mean loungey) tracks. Apparently what Bomba Stereo has done on this album is to take the grooves of champeta (a Cartagenan cousin of reggaeton) and wrap them in a pop / rock. I’m not from Colombia so I wouldn’t know — but I do like their sound.

I like the production on their album too. Right from the first track — “Cosita Rica” — you can hear that they’ve got a great thing going. Not complicated, but it’s well-done and it grabs me. The second track is “Fuego” and then I’m hooked!
